Activities of the institute

The Institute organizes and conducts continuing judicial education and training, including study courses, lectures, seminars, workshops, and conferences, for all cadres of Judicial Officers in the country and their supporting staff. Other training programmes are also organized and conducted by the Institute in collaboration with other organizations in Nigeria and abroad. This is with the view of improving and updating the overall knowledge of the Judicial Officers and their supporting staff as well as the general efficiency, performance, and uniformity in the quality of judicial service in the courts. The Judicial Officers include Judges of both Superior and the Lower Courts; while their Supporting Staff are from their respective Courts in the entire hierarchy of the Court System in Nigeria.
"The Mandate of the Institute is to serve as the principal focal point of Judicial activities, relating to the promotion of efficiency, uniformity and improvement in the quality of Judicial Services in the Superior and Lower Courts."

FEW OF THE WORKSHOPS THE INSTITUTE CONDUCTS.

The following workshops, seminars and conferences are usually conducted by the institute.

  1. Biennial All Nigeria Judges’ Conference for the Superior Court Justices/ Judges, i.e. Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Justices of the Court of Appeal, Judges of the Federal, FCT and State High Courts, Kadis of the Sharia Courts of Appeal, Judges of the Customary Courts of Appeal.
  2. Biennial Conference of All Nigeria Judges of the Lower Courts. i.e. Magistrates, Area and Customary Court Judges and Sharia Court Judges.
  3. Annual Induction Course for Newly Appointed Judges and Kadis
  4. Refresher Course for High Court Judges, Kadis of the Sharia Courts of Appeal and Judges of the Customary Courts of Appeal, nationwide.
  5. National Workshop for Judicial Librarians
  6. National Workshop for Court Registrars.
  7. Judicial Administration Workshop for Chief Registrars, Secretaries of Federal and State Judicial Service Commissions, Secretary of the Judical Service Committee (FCT), Deputy Chief Registrars, Directors, Chief Accountants, etc.
  8. National Workshop for Magistrates
  9. National Workshop for Sharia Court Judges and Directors and Inspectors of Sharia Courts.
  10. National Workshop for Area and Customary Court Judges and Directors and Inspectors of Area and Customary Courts.
  11. Workshop on Information Technology for Confidential Secretaries and Typists in the Judiciary.
  12. National Workshop for Junior Staff of the Judiciary.

Furthermore, the National Judicial Insitute also organizes and conducts the following seminars and workshops in collaboration with other organizations in Nigeria and abroad:

  1. Zonal Inter-State Workshops for Lower Court Judges on Human Rights and Administration of Justice, which was organized in collaboration with the Civil Liberties Organization, National Human Rights Commission, and the Danish Center for Human Rights, Denmark (1998 2001).
  2. Annual Oil and Gas Seminar for Judges, which was organized in conjunction with the Shelll Petroleum Development Company PLC (1998 2002)
  3. Maritime Seminar for Judges, which is organized in collaboration with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.
  4. With effect from 2002, the National Judicial Institute commenced collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria in organizing and conducting the annual Seminar on Banking and Allied Matters for Judges (2002 till date).
  5. Training Workshop on Legal Issues in Telecommunications for Judges, which since 2003 was organized in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission
  6. Training Workshop on Jurisprudence of Equality Project (JEP), which since 2002 was organized in collaboration with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the National Association of Women Judges, Nigeria.
  7. Judicial Training Workshop on Environmental Law in Nigeria, held in collaboration with UNEP (2006 2007).
  8. Training Workshops on ADR, Ethics for Judicial Officers/ Court Employees and Assessment of the Nigerian Courts in Ten Pilot States is currently being organized in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
  9. African ADR Summit organized in collaboration with Negotiation and Conflict Management Group (NCMG) (2006 to date).
  10. Workshop on the Theme u201c The Administration of Justice in the Nigerian Capital Marketu201d, organized in collaboration with the Investments and Securities Tribunal, Abuja, with effect from October, 2007 and collaboration on this subject commenced with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2008 to date.
  11. The Nigerian Army Law Seminar organized in collaboration with the Directorate of Army Legal Services in Abuja from 12-16 October, 2009.
  12. Proposed Anti-Money Laundering, Cyber Crime and Cyber-Security Seminar to be held in collaboration with the National Assembly Caucus on Anti-Money Laundering and Cyber Security Coalition in the Six Geopolitical Zones in Nigeria.

In 1996 when the Institute relocated from Lagos to Abuja, the Federal Capital, the Institute was temporarily accommodated and located at the Supreme Court of Nigeria Complex, Three Arms Zone, Central District, Abuja. Towards the end of 2005, however, construction work on the Administrative Complex of the Institute was completed and the Institute then moved to the Permanent Site along the Airport Road, precisely in February 2006. Today, the Institute can boast of its own Auditorium the Andrews Otutu Obaseki Auditorium, Library Complex, 4 Units of Directors Quarters (Mamman Nasir Court), 4 Units of Senior Staff Quarters (Augustine Nnamani Court), 2 Units comprising 4 apartments Intermediate Staff Quarters, providing accommodation for four families (Mustapha Akanbi Court), 6 Units of 4 apartments Junior Staff Quarters, all in all providing accommodation for 24 families (Nekan Ademola Court), Access Road to the Quarters (Olajide Olatawura Close), the NJI Staff Clinic, the Fire Station, Administrator’s Quarters and NJI Fitness Centre. Other infrastructural developments of the Institute are still on going.
